HIA supported 158 thousand people in Afghanistan within 5 projects

Hungarian Interchurch Aid in cooperation with the UN World Food Programme has supported more than 22 thousand households in Afghanistan in the framework of 5 projects in 2020. In addition to providing food to the population, which is even more vulnerable now due to the coronavirus pandemic, HIA implemented several projects in the frame of so-called „Asset Creation Cash Based Transfer” and „Unconditional Seasonal Support-Food” programs.

The organization handed over 2106 tons of foodstuffs to those living in Balkh, Baghlan and Samangan provinces. With the participation of beneficiaries involved in the program HIA built a 370 meters’ long retaining wall and two water dams with capacity of 50,000 m3. The organization maintained a terraced pistachio plantation at 235 thousand meters, operated a nursery garden, and established small gardens and hing plantations. Within its programs HIA provided training in backyard farming and hydroponics primarily for women.

HIA has been implementing humanitarian and development programs in Afghanistan since 2001 which are reflecting on local problems and needs in favour of successful long-term development. The organization achieved significant results in the fields of education, rural development, public administration, healthcare and capacity building under the management of its representation operating in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif.  Recently, HIA has been providing training in income-generating activities and agricultural, water management and infrastructural developments through the implementation of complex food programs thus improving the livelihood of the population.

Since 2001 HIA has supported more than 870 thousand people in 8 provinces of Afghanistan. The total value of programs exceeds HUF 6 billion.
