Thousands of victims after floods in Libya: HIA launches fundraising to help survivors
Join the fundraising for survivors of the catastrophe in Derna, Libya!
Storm Daniel has made landfall in Eastern Libya on Sunday night, causing flash floods in the whole region. The city of Derna – located at the delta of a seasonal wadi – was washed into the sea by a wall of water after two dams upstream in the wadi broke. Authorities report over ten thousand victims and another ten thousand missing. A quarter of the town has been completely destroyed, hospitals are no longer functioning and rescue operations are still under way. The extreme weather has also caused flash floods in other parts of Libya, resulting in severe damage to infrastructure and extensive material damage. The main needs now are for hygiene items, drinking water, medical supplies and food.
In solidarity with those affected and those helping them in their superhuman struggle on the ground, HIA is joining the international community to help alleviate the humanitarian disaster in Libya. HIA haspledged emergency aid to support the Libyans worst affected by the disaster and have contacted our partner organisation DanChurchAid, which has been working on the ground for decades.
