International assistance

HIA has implemented humanitarian and development aid programmes in more than 50 countries, with a strategic focus on 5.

With our experienced professionals, we are prepared to mediate the solidarity of those living in Hungary beyond its borders as part of the international humanitarian community around the world. In our international programmes, we pay special attention to neighbouring countries, particularly regions inhabited by Hungarian communities and the Hungarian diaspora. Our permanent presence in the regions with strategic focus (Ukraine, Middle East, East Africa and Central Asia) allows us to closely monitor, assess and respond efficiently to upcoming, acute and chronic needs, while also implementing long-term development projects. In line with its core value of solidarity, HIA is prepared to launch "solidarity actions" as well, closely working with communities affected by crises and fundraising for local organisations working on the ground. To this end, HIA offers a safe channel for those who wish to express their solidarity with financial donations.

Iraq

Iraq

Officially registered as an NGO in Iraq and its Kurdistan region, we have implemented humanitarian and development projects in Iraq since 2003. As Iraq's struggle with ethnic and religious conflict and its location at the frontline of climate change has significantly hindered its development, we work towards reinforcing climate and conflict resilience, food security, expanding access to education and supporting livelihoods through our offices in Erbil and Tal Afar for host communities, returnees, refugees and internally displaced people.

Ukraine

Hungarian Interchurch Aid (HIA) is a member of ACT Alliance with an active presence in Ukraine dating back to 1998. Having established country-wide operations in 2014, in February 2022 HIA has doubled down on its efforts to provide help to the victims of the war. From tangible, in-kind aid to cash assistance, community-based relief and protection activities, HIA’s response to the crisis caused by war is multisectoral and flexible. Often operating in in hard-to-reach areas, HIA’s help reaches beneficiaries from westernmost Zakarpattia to Kharkiv in the East and Kherson in the South.

Afghanistan

Afghanistan

Our presence in the country devastated by a series of wars and natural disasters dates back to 2001, when we first started implementing humanitarian and development aid programmes. In addition to humanitarian aid, our objective is to achieve long-term sustainable results in the areas of education, rural development, public administration development, health and capacity building through our offices in Mazar-i-Sharif and Kabul.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia

Initially responding to severe drought conditions in the region, we started our first project in Ethiopia in 2011. Since then, we have focused on supporting the most vulnerable communities through programs that improve access to food, water, education, and livelihoods. As humanitarian needs in Ethiopia have grown due to conflict, natural disasters, and rising food prices, HIA has expanded its presence to several regions across the country. Our work emphasizes sustainable development, combining emergency relief with long-term solutions like education, vocational training, and agricultural support. Through these efforts, we aim to enhance resilience and improve living conditions in underserved and crisis-affected areas.

Türkiye

Türkiye

The earthquake of 6 February 2023 in Türkiye and Syria caused enormous destruction in terms of lives and property. The numerous container sites housing hundredthousands of survivors still barely provide protection against extreme weather conditions, while the lack of privacy and population density only exacerbate existing mental & physical hygiene challenges caused by the earthquake. Here, our response aims to strengthen the resilience and preserve the dignity of those who have lost their loved ones, their homes and their livelihoods.

Emergency & Solidarity responses

Emergency & Solidarity responses

Working with a number of international and government partners, we provide immediate assistance in many parts of the world. The primary objective of rapid emergency & solidarity programmes is to provide immediate, direct assistance to the affected and most vulnerable groups of the population in crisis situations in the event of natural or man-made disasters. Following assessments, we always respond to local needs - most often by providing in-kind aid, shelter & psychosocial assistance in cooperation with local partners.

Your help makes a difference

Your help makes a difference

We are able to express the solidarity of our donors worldwide in natural and man-made disasters through our humanitarian and development programmes. Being part of a world-wide coalition of aid organisations - ACT Alliance - enables us to help in an effective but still global manner even if we do not have a presence in the given country in crisis. Join our fundraising campaigns to provide essential food, shelter and a chance to break out for those affected by war, floods, earthquakes and complex, multi-faceted crises.
