Solidarity appeal launched to support survivors of devastating flash floods in Nepal

A powerful flash flood swept through the Nepal–China border region on Wednesday morning. According to the latest information, at least 162 people have died and a further 844 are missing, including, according to the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, two Hungarian tourists. The devastating flood is believed to have been triggered by a landslide. In the narrow mountain valley, the overflowing Bhotekoshi River swept away 19 bridges, 40 kilometres of roads, 13 hydropower plants and numerous homes, leaving widespread destruction in its wake. The damage to infrastructure in the Himalayan country is extensive, while the disaster is also expected to have a major impact on the livelihoods of communities in the affected area. The situation remains critical further downstream, with rescue teams continuing their search for those still missing.

Hungarian Interchurch Aid expresses its solidarity with those affected by the disaster and with the people working tirelessly on the ground to assist them. As part of this effort, we are launching a fundraising appeal to support communities affected by the disaster.
