Emergency aid for victims of the earthquake in Türkiye

The earthquake of 6 February 2023 in Turkey and Syria caused enormous destruction in terms of both lives and property: more than 230,000 collapsed buildings buried 45,000 people, 1.7 million were forced into tents, nearly 3 million were made homeless and the livelihoods of some 9 million people were severely affected.

Following the earthquake, we launched a nationwide fundraising campaign and our humanitarian experts immediately began field assistance and assessments in cooperation with HIA’s Turkish partners as soon as the rescue phase was over.

The humanitarian aid programme, building on the assessments, targeted the most urgent daily needs. During March 2023, hygiene items were distributed to tent camp residents in Adıyaman, durable food was distributed to Hatay province and a Christian community school for the needy was supported with school supplies – reaching a total of 7,000 people so far.

Nearly 100,000 people in Hungary have joined the Relief Aid’s extraordinary fundraising campaign through the 1353 donation line, and Tesco has provided an extraordinary donation of HUF 20 million to the initiative, which includes the implementation of basic relief operations (durable food, hygiene items) as well as the installation of living and toilet containers in 2 camps in Hatay.
